Thanksgiving 2019

Ben and Emily were kind enough to make the drive to Minnesota for Thanksgiving this year. We loved having them and the kids as usualy had so much fun playing with cousins.
One night we took them to our fun service place called Feed My Starving Children where you get to assemble, seal and package boxes of food packets for 3rd world countries. They loved it as much as we thought they would.
While they were here we got lots of snow. I have a million more pictures of the kids in the snow but I can't find them this year and it's driving me crazy.
Our annual grateful tree. I love that the kids are getting more detailed and thoughtful about what they're grateful for each year. Mallie also took this off the wall and put it on a posterboard for her family tradition's assignment. It made it easy for her and she got to share this with her class. So fun!

Ashton turns 12!

It is so very fitting that Ashton had his birthday cake in his PJs. This kid lives for the days he doesn't have to get dressed.
There is ice cream rolled up into this angel food cake so he had to act fast to get all those candles out.
This is a picture he took of himself while out mowing the lawn while listening to science pod casts on my phone. He doesn't have one so once in awhile I'll catch a gem like this on my phone.
I can't remember why he was dressed up like this but I loved that he still looked young and playful so I wanted to capture it.
Ashton makes me look like a better Mom than I am. He acts more mature than most 12 year old boys and he has a deep desire to connect with adults. He is respectful and understands the scriptures in a pretty profound way. Academically I never know what's going on in his classes because he is on top of it and school doesn't stress him out. The only real downfall I can say is that he loves to win games so much that he'll fudge the rules. We're working on it... and if that's the only thing that makes me nervous I'd say that's a win. I love this boy who is incredibly in tune to the needs of the family. He does like to push his sisters' buttons but he also knows when to step up and help in a myriad of ways. He's pretty much the best.

Rachel Turns 4

I could write a page about Rachel. She fascinates me. She is bold and brave and will tell you exactly what she thinks. On the flip side if on the rare occasion her feelings are hurt she gets the cutest sad face and will clam right up.
The kitkat and M&M cake has become a staple around here. The kids eat all the candy and basically just toss the cake but it sure looks cool!
Cousins were in town for her birthday this year and she loved it!
She got a light up lady bug and a fairy dress!
This picture pretty much sums up how I feel about this little girl. I love that she'll dance anywhere and doesn't care who is watching. I hope she never loses her leadership/bossiness skills. Happy 4th Birthday!!

Labor Day with Bemily

Ben and Emily were gracious enough to drive up to see us for Labor Day even though we had just convinced them a few weeks before to meet us in Nauvoo. We're so happy they made the trek and the kids had so much fun playing together!
We went to the apple orchard and took a hayride.
Rachel and Grace were as mischievous and cute together once again!

On Sunday when we needed to get out of the house we took the kids on the foot bridge that links Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Here are the kiddos lined up.
We feel so spoiled to have had so many visitors since being here and there is nothing that we love more than seeing cousins playing together!

Lucy Turns 7!

Lucy turned 7 this year!!
Here she is in Nauvoo a couple weeks before her birthday. This is her namesake's headstone.

Nana and Papa were here for her actual birthday and she told them numerous times they had better not leave before her birthday. Luckily they didn't and Nana took her to pick out this cake.
Then we went to the rollerskating rink.
This is the renaissance dress-up dress she begged for.
Lucy is still as glued to me as ever. She's excited to start 2nd grade and she still lights up the room with her smile.

Hattie turns 2!

Hattie wasn't a particularly early talker but holy smokes in the last 4 months she has taken off. She speaks in full sentences and articulate her thoughts so well for a 2 year old. She gets herself dressed and doesn't like to have a dirty diaper. I'm pretty sure this little one is going to potty train fairly soon. She doesn't let anyone boss her around but will choose which older sibling she wants to play with.
Aw the sass on this little girl. I just love that she mimics everything.

She was so excited for presents and kept making this "oh" face. Also, her poor little blonde feather hair is coming slow. But we're hoping it'll thicken up just like Mallie's.

I love this picture because I'm the youngest of a big family. I don't have many memories of some of my oldest brothers but I always want Hattie to know this is how she was doted on by her older siblings. I also have a theory that youngest kids in big families are spoiled in big families because the older siblings don't like to hear crying or whining so they give the little ones whatever they need to make them happy. That certainly is the case over here.
Her sprinkle cake that started out twice as big but slowly dwindled down to this side when the first round of sprinkles slid off the entire cake. Too funny.
You can't see her well but this picture embodies who Hattie is. She hates nursery and doesn't love strangers but this girl will go places all alone and it scares me to death. One day this summer while I was packing up from the lake she went out of my eye sight for a minute. I looked through the water and on the grass and couldn't see her. I started to panic but then I looked up. There she was just hanging out on the empty lifeguard stand. I love this girl and all the fun she brings into the family.

Mallie turns 9!

Mallie had a fun filled day planned for her birthday. She woke up early and got to open her jewelry making kit and stilts. Oh boy did she love those stilts!
Normally she loves to make her own cake but this year because we were going to be out all day playing Nana bought her a unicorn cake. I bought her fondant so she could make her own toppers. I hope some day she can work in a bakery and make little figures to her heart's content because she already has such a gift for sculpting tiny things.

We went to Nelson's ice cream where she ordered the lumber jack to share. Three of them were working on that and they still couldn't finish.
We got home in time to blow out candles.
Mallie has endless amounts of energy and talents. She is one of our shyer kids but is the absolute loudest in our house. She is always cartwheeling everywhere and loves to leap off things. She is an incredible big sister. She loves to play with and dote on Hattie and Sophie. All the kids want her to play with them because when she is all in in a game she is the best partner. She has the stink eye in our entire family and she can hold a grudge but when I tell her to look in the mirror at that mad face she'll cut right up. She has lost some of her organizational tendencies since we've moved to this house - we blame it on the small room but she still has moments where she'll clean something as a past time. We love her and all her craziness. She brings so much light and laughter to this house!

Hannah Turns 10

On Hannah's birthday I went to eat lunch with her at school and then because it was so late in the day we figured I had better just take that sweet girl to run errands with me instead of finishing the day. So that's what we did. Hannah LOVES homemade pizza and doesn't love cake so she had her afternoon all planned out. We made pizza first...
Then we set up our own Orange Leaf with tons of toppings.
It's a little tricky to do candles without a cake and gather all the kids to sing before the candles melt that ice cream with wax. We promptly tossed that bowl when the song was over and she started fresh.
This girl LOVES birthdays and she was so happy about her ice cream set up.
My parents bought us this picnic table when they came into town and we use it all the time. This has nothing to do with Hannah's birthday but I thought I should mention it since it's the little things like this that make me wonder why hadn't we done this before??
 Present time.
I hope our kids always remember their birthdays with siblings looking over their shoulders as they unwrap gifts. Their is mix of jealous excitement and they all prefer opening presents with an audience.
Hannah is our most compassionate child and the first to express gratitude. She loves being the big sister and is still pretty gifted in the drawing department. She spends at least an hour everyday upstairs drawing. She loves to make up stories and write and is at her desk for most of her free time. We love this hugely extroverted little gal. She is the first to include someone who is new or shy and has a gift for breaking the ice in a new situation. Happy Birthday Hannah Lei!

Sophie's Birth Story

Once again at the end of this pregnancy I was experiencing loads of false labor at night. My friend Harmony texted me and said if you haven't had a baby by Thursday lets go out for pedicures and lunch.

As we were at Chipotle discussing birth stories at lunch with a couple other friends Harmony brough up how she loved birth and was fascinated by it. I half jokingly said “Harmony, I feel like you should just come to my birth.” And she said, “Oh my gosh, really?” I didn’t think she’d really be interested so when she responded with enthusiasm I said, “Sure! You can take pictures!” She said she would LOVE to and that she’d pack her camera bag up and be on call. Over the next few days I texted her everyday asking if she was losing sleep over this and wondered if she was serious enough that she didn’t mind if I called her in the middle of the night. She kept reaffirming that this was so exciting for her and she was ready at any time of day or night.

It seemed like every other night I would have contractions for a couple hours usually from 12-2am and then they would die off. I was losing sleep but gearing up that there was a possibility could be a week late like Hattie. On Sunday night David and I started to try and plan out how his rotations and schedule would be switched around if his paternity leave didn’t start pretty quickly in April. We started to worry and thought it sure would be the most convenient for us if we could go ahead and have a baby before Tuesday.

Sunday night I was up again with contractions for a couple hours so I woke up the next morning pretty tired. I had a midwife appointment so I decided to let Ashton stay home to babysit so I didn't have to drag the little ones to the birth center. Over the last few school days I had let each kid take a day off to spend with me before the baby arrived. Monday happened to be Lucy’s day so she came to my midwife appointment with me. I wasn’t feeling any contractions during the appointment so we set an appointment for 41 weeks that I was really hoping to not make it to. We made a Sam's Club trip and headed home.

By the time I had fed everyone lunch and put Hattie down for a nap at 12:15 I was ready to crash after being up the night before. As I laid down for a nap I felt a decently strong  contraction almost the same moment my head hit the pillow. I said to myself, “no way, not now, I need a nap”. I slept uninterrupted and woke up feeling really rested around 1:30. Thank goodness for phones to be able to document what would happen in the next 3.5 hours.

I Marco Polo’d Kim around 1:45pm and said still pregnant nothing is really changing. At 2:15 I was talking to Mandy on the phone while I was cleaning up upstairs and starting laundry. We chatted for about 20 minutes and I noticed contractions picking up. She asked if I wanted her to time them and  I decided they weren’t painful enough to really pay attention to timing them yet. We hung up the phone and pretty quickly after that I realized that this was real labor and contractions were getting more painful.

At 2:45 I texted David and Harmony and said this isn’t a false alarm or an April Fool’s joke that we were having a baby this afternoon. Harmony texted right back and said she was heading home from St Paul and to let her know if/when I needed a ride. I told her to hang on while David and I figured out how we were going to meet up. Meanwhile, Hannah and Mallie came home from school and Hattie woke up from a nap. I told the kids I was going to have a baby that night and started to get Ashton prepped for babysitting while we would be gone through dinner time.

David was with a patient and took a little while to call back. At 3:00pm he finally called and said he was at the ortho clinic and that it would be awhile before he could get to his car. We decided I better have Harmony come pick me up and he would meet us straight at the birth center. We were worried by the time he drove 30 minutes home that we’d be caught in traffic heading back to the birth center. I texted Harmony and asked her to come get me. She knocked on the door about 3:15. I opened the door and told her I hadn’t quite decided if I should bring the girls or not. I had talked to her about this at lunch on Thursday and she said that she would help watch them and that she thought they would love it. So I asked the three oldest girls if they wanted to come. They all nodded eagerly so I told them to get jackets, shoes and kindles and we had better get going. They ran around quickly gathering and poor Ashton said, “I want to come! Can I come?” and I said, “Sorry Bud, we need you to babysit and you’ll never have to go through this, so you better stay!” He was great about it and said, “Okay.” And the 5 of us hopped in Harmony’s car.

We talked on the way to the birth center and Harmony and I joked about how fun it was that she was coming and how randomly this all started and that we would be bonded for life after this. We pulled up to the birth center around 4ish and David was sitting in his car in the front. We all walked in and I put my stuff in the birthing suite. I know I wasn’t acting like I was in serious labor so no one was too concerned about me. The nurse told me to make myself comfortable and that Rachel would be my midwife and that she was finishing up an appointment but she’d be out in the next 20 minutes. I was thrilled to hear it was Rachel out of all the midwives at the birth center she was the one I was hoping would be there for delivery.

The girls were already getting restless and I didn’t want to stay cooped up in a room so I said David and I were going to go for a walk and Harmony said she would take the girls to the little café down the street. We set off different directions and said we’d call when they should head back.  David and I had walked one loop for about 10 minutes and I realized this was getting serious. Before we headed back in he texted Harmony and said, “you should probably head back” “10-15 mins”. Poor Harmony and the girls had just gotten their food and Harmony interpreted that text as the baby is coming in 15 minutes. So she tossed her soup in the trash and she and the girls ran the three blocks back to the birth center. I’m glad I didn’t know this at the time or I would have felt bad!

At 4:15 I marco polo’d my sisters and mom and said I’m here I’ll let you know when I’m checked. Pretty soon after that Rachel walked in and checked me and said I was at 5cm but that my cervix was super stretchy so she wouldn’t be shocked if I dilated to a 10 in no time.  The girls and Harmony came in and I decided contractions were painful enough that I had better hop in the birthing tub. From there the contractions came every couple of minutes and in between I remember laughing at the girls bouncing on yoga balls and David staying right by my side rubbing my back. Hannah in particular would not take her eyes off me and was fascinated by the whole thing. I didn’t want everyone just looking at me and waiting so I asked Rachel to tell us why she got into midwifery. After that when it got quiet I looked at her and said, “Are you afraid if you leave the room I’ll have a baby?” And she laughed and said her appointments were through and she had nowhere else to be.

It’s funny because after I said that she did leave for a couple of minutes. And I remember looking up and telling Harmony and David I was close and I could literally feel what felt like a water balloon down there. With the next contraction I started to push and heard David say pretty loudly… “RACHEL!” she came right back in right as I felt Sophie’s head slip out IN her sac. So bizarre, I felt it finally rupture as her body slid out and I pulled her out of the water. Rachel was right there and we both realized the cord was around her neck. I remember it being tight enough that I didn’t know what to do so I handed her right to Rachel. Rachel cleared the cord and put her on my chest and right away I could tell she was just fine and she gave a little cry. I remember laying back against the tub and saying, “I’m so glad that’s over.” I had dreaded going through the pain of labor again and I was so glad to know that this was the last time I had to experience that. She was born at 5:04pm about an hour after we got to the birth center and just 2.5 hours after I realized I was actually in labor. If there is any benefit to doing this 8x I’m glad it’s FAST labors!

The girls gathered round and talked about how tiny she was and what in the world was all the white goo she was covered in. She was completely covered in vernix and it was pretty gross even to me. Then within a couple of minutes of laying on my chest she started to open her little eyes. It was so cute and we all felt like she knew there was a party going on and she wanted to be a part of it. We showed the girls the umbilical cord and asked if Hannah wanted to cut it because she had been into this whole process. She was really excited as David helped her until she saw blood after she snipped it. She had a minor freak out that she was hurting me and Sophie but was assured her it was just fine. The pictures of that are some of David and I’s favorites.

After that was pretty textbook. David held her for awhile I got out of the tub and then the girls all took turns. Then we sent them home with Harmony and then I nursed her for a good while. David headed out the door to grab some dinner around 6:15pm and they weighed and measured her while he was still gone. She was 7lbs 7oz and 20.25 inches long. She looked so tiny we were all surprised it was even that much. It’s amazing how my body grows 7lb babies every time. David came in afterwards and we were thrilled to sit and eat Chipotle while they did the newborn exam. I took a shower and then just 3 hours later at 8pm David and I headed out the door to go home and it was glorious to sleep in my bed that night!

3.31.2019

March 31st.

The day before Sophie was born I gathered everyone as we were getting ready for church to the loft. I told them I wanted one last picture before Sophie was born and by golly she better be coming this week some time. I was ready to be done!
They willingly obliged. David for some reason is always the last one ready for church. He would defend himself and say its because he is always helping everyone else and not that he's the slowest.

This pregnancy has been a whopper for me. I had varicose veins for the first time and had to wear a compression sock on my right leg for the last 4 months. I know I should be grateful that that this is the first time that pregnancy has really been annoying and for the most part I was. But near the end I was so happy to know this was my final time being pregnant.
And here is the guess date calendar. It's been fun the last couple of babies to see who guesses right. There are times when I feel bad for our older kids that they don't have a few siblings right close together and they are all at the same stage of life. But then I think of moments like this and see them with babies and I remember this is good too. They are responsible and resilient and we do our best to make sure they get enough time with out the littles around and then I know that that's okay and enough for them.

What's in a name? Part 2

We thought coming up with another girl name would be quite the task. Turns out it wasn’t at all. That baby right there is my Grandpa Jack. His mom passed away in 1918 when she was just 30 years old. We named Rachel after her. The woman in this picture is Sophia (Rachel's Mom) my great great grandmother. She helped raise my grandpa and was a pretty amazing lady. I knew all this already but one Sunday a couple months ago as we were driving to church we were talking about girl names with the kids. We had already gone through what we felt was every name in the book and David randomly brought up Sophia. I remembered that was the name of Rachel's mom and I came home that day and decided to learn more about her on familysearch. As I sat there and read about her I was stunned. Not only was she the youngest of 8 kids but she had an older sister named Hattie who she adored. What are the odds? Not odds at all just huge tender moments from the Lord. I started to read about Hattie and soon realized that the name I thought we chose just because I really loved a book character with that name turned out to be my great great aunt who was also phenomenal. Now I know why I was so set on the name Hattie even though it was so different. There are several sets of sisters named Hattie and Sophia going all the way back on my mom's line. As we prepare to welcome our 6th little girl and #8 I'm so grateful to feel the presence of these incredible women on the other side of the veil who care deeply about their posterity. I keep thinking how fun and joyous it must be to send down all their namesakes into our family.

Scotty Turns 5!

Scotty turned 5 on Sunday this year. This kid is so well loved by the entire family. In fact, I might say that universally he is the one that gets a long and is loved by every single one of his siblings. He is easy going and the best playmate. It was so cute that on his birthday all of his siblings made cards and wrapped different gifts to give him. Gifts that came from their own stash of toys which was especially tender as they tried to pick something out that Scotty already liked.

This kid's love for remote control cars is still going strong.

He also got a football and a little stuffed animal from Hannah.
His hand looks crazy big in this picture. He is still 99% for height and into all the sports. We're trying to figure out how to narrow down what we'll actually sign him up for because he seems to be good at everything!
Also, I can't forget to mention that he asks for his hair to be done very single day. He doesn't like to leave the house unless his hair is done and sprayed. It's hilarious, especially after Ashton who could careless still what his hair looks like.
After church and in jammies we finally ate his M&M cake. He loved that thing! Happy Birthday Scotty boy!!
